安達充鄰家女孩漫畫故事剛開始時，上杉達也與上杉和也相反，缺乏運動。沒有確切理由去與上杉和也競爭。上杉達也潛在能力被忽視，經由2年的練習成為一個一流的棒球選手。上杉和也為救小孩車禍死亡後2年，上杉達也成為甲子園勝利投手。

中學時是回家社（即沒有參加社團），高中時被佐知子邀請參加棒球隊。但後來又放棄了棒球，並在原田勸誘下加入了拳擊部。拳擊動態視力與天生的運動神經，並克服了艱辛訓練成為新人戰優勝者。在和也去世後，棒球隊隊長黑木正試圖尋找一個王牌投手。
經過柏葉英二郎嚴格特訓後通過地區預賽，甲子園初出場初優勝使達也成為焦點。大學時期到外國（獨立聯盟）闖盪。
