东周國是自戰國时代西周国分裂出来的一个小国。东周国为西周国的兄弟国，其始封君为东周惠公。西周國當時有繼承問題，趙成侯與韓莊侯以武力介入，立惠公於巩地（今河南省巩义市西南），前249年被秦国所灭。《史记·秦本纪》载，秦庄襄王元年（前249年）“东周君与诸侯谋秦，秦使相国吕不韦诛之，尽入其国”，东周国灭亡。至此，周武王姬發建立的姬周政權全部覆滅。

关於这位东周国开国君主的身份、东周国分裂的原因存在不同说法。
一曰东周惠公是西周威公之子，西周惠公的弟弟。依據《史记·周本纪》、《韩非子·内储说下篇》等文献，威公去世后，周显王二年（前367年）， 西周公子根，在东部的巩国旧地自立，赵成侯、韩莊侯用武力加以支持，遂分裂出东周這個小国。东周故都约在今河南巩义市孝义镇西的康北村一带。也有說法是东周惠公是西周威公死后，被分封至巩国旧地的。
