在2000年，紐西蘭語言學教授 Averil Coxhead 做了一項全球性調查，她收集共3,500萬字的學術文獻，總結出570個英語學習者一生中必須要懂得的英文字。而這項調查，便成為了《你一定要懂的字彙570》此書的面世機機緣。四位本地英語學者，Victor Fung 馮強、June Leung 梁賀琪、Richard Eng 伍經衡 和 Alan Poon 潘柏麟在取得教授Averil Coxhead的首肯後，便合力以此研究結果撰寫一書，希望藉此書稍減同學升上大學後面對英文學術寫作感到無從入手的焦慮。四位來自不同崗位的學者，有條理地整理出一套有效的學習方法，除了展現這批英文字的解釋、語態、讀音、用法，並輔以例句，為讀者示範可以如何使用這570個大學論文的最常用字外，梗把570個字會按詞性分門別類，也會按詞類的特性加以分類，以方便讀者使用及查閱，並且找到一套適合自己的英語學習方法。[2][3]
