商人，民間領袖和慈善家。在18世紀80年代的檀香山的反華運動中，他捍衛華人的權利，也幫忙團結當地華人。因為古的努力，保住了當地華人的權利，不被反華歧視的力量所剝奪，使得許多華人可以有成功的事業及安定的生活。
當孫逸仙在夏威夷念書時，古今輝與他結識。他們兩位都是基督徒，也都是薛滿牧師的好友。古那時是夏威夷的中國副領事，幫助孫拿到進檀香山的旅行簽証。古和教會中的會友都曾出錢幫助過孫，後來孫在1911年推翻滿清政府。古全力支持孫逸仙的革命理念要建立現代化中國。
早期生活[编辑]
古今輝是客家人，1835年出生在中國廣東省嘉应州。在20多歲時，先到東南亞去找做生意的機會，後在1866年，他決定去夏威夷創業發展。 因為古的英文很好，很快就融入當地貿易商圈。短短數年間，他就成為檀香山最成功的富商之一。
宗教信仰[编辑]
1875年，由舊金山來的華人牧師薛滿，帶領古今輝成為基督徒。當時他們都在戴盟牧師的西門聖教會 (Seamen's Bethel Church) 參加聚會。 1877年，他們成立了中國青年會，後來成為中國基督徒協會。1877年11月13日，夏威夷的卡拉考國王（King Kalakaua）特許他們可以合法聚會，許多的中國人都來參加。 隨著聚會人數的增多，他們募款建立了一座新教堂。1879年，「第一華人基督教會」的前身「華人基督教會」教堂落成啟用。
社會服務[编辑]
古今輝在1882年被選為夏威夷中華會館的副會長，協助服務到夏威夷的華人移民。中國清朝政府派給他一個正式的官階，成為夏威夷的中國副領事。
古後來在1892年7月接任成為檀香山中華會館的會長。 因著當時的反華運動越演越盛，古在1894年成立了「聯衛會」，並且在1897年3月建立了一所專為華人服務的「惠華醫院」，讓被當地醫院拒收的同胞病患可以有醫療照顧。 在他的基督徒朋友—夏威夷總統杜爾(Sanford B. Dole)的協助下，古為華人移民打贏了官司，保護華人移民在夏威夷有居住及工作的權利，並且可以合法獲得美國公民權。
1900年1月20日，一場可怕的大火幾乎將整座中國城燒光，古積極幫助重建中國城以及減輕當地華商的巨額損失。他捐出自己的錢財來幫助災民。這件義舉傳回到中國，清朝政府特別褒獎表揚他的貢獻。
1902年7月，因著美國國務院對夏威夷的中國領事館有些不滿，古由中國副領事被升作執行總領事。前任的中國駐夏威夷領事楊蔚彬因為家庭因素請辭後，古今輝立刻接任。
在他任職於檀香山中華會館時期，古與其他僑領合力建立了幾個社區中心來服務僑民，包括保安局、聯衛會、中華基督徒協會、在福特街上的華人基督教會、中西義學及惠華醫院。
在夏威夷各島統一之後，陸地月刊刊登了一篇文章談到在檀香山的中國社群：「古今輝是華人中最重要的人物，他是夏威夷的中國領事、中華會館的會長、醫療協會會長、YMCA會長、正直可靠的商人、有精明的商場睿智、極可觀的財富、是多家企業的負責人。他無論走到哪裡都是一位極具影響力的人。他白手起家，融合了寬廣的視野、可靠的人格、豐富的智慧，達到今日的成就。」

1908年古今輝過世後，「夏威夷福音協會」在年度報告中有悼詞讚揚他：
| “ | 古今輝，是我們敬重的華人宣教同工以及夏威夷最著名的華人之一，在今年5月3日過世，享年70餘載。古於西元1867年來到夏威夷，早年從事經商。他在西元1872年與夏威夷女子艾倫(Ellen Kamae)結婚。古夫婦都是戴盟牧師的聖教會會友。古自信主之後，就成為各個基督教及慈善工作中的華人領袖。我們讚揚他在光榮長壽的一生中留給我們的啟發......他是多年被敬重的中國政府代表，活躍忙碌的商人，忠心委身的教會執事，YMCA工作的主要推手，主日學老師，聖經導師，傳道者及夏威夷合格教師，大家會永遠懷念他。他的夫人及家人都是贊同支持他的同工。有數以百計的同胞及各國代表都出席了這位領袖人物的葬禮。 | ” |
