國際漢語教育是指對漢語非母語者開展的漢語作為第二語言教育。包括在中國境內開展的對外漢語教學，也包括在中國境外開展的漢語作為第二語言教學。
中國境內的國際漢語教育源遠流長，最早在《孟子》一書中就有國際漢語教育相關理論的詳細論述。漢朝時匈奴派弟子來學習漢語，隋唐時大批遣隋使、遣唐使來到中原學習漢語。1949年以前，在當時的國立中央大學、燕京大學、清華大學都有外國學生學習漢語。1949年後成立了專門教授外國人漢語的專門機構——清華大學東歐留學生中文專修班，著名學者呂叔湘參與專修班工作，鄧懿、王還、杜榮等先生是中國最早的國際漢語教師，被稱作“國際漢語教育奠基人”。近年來國際範圍內漢語學習者逐年增加，國際漢語教育逐漸成為一個新興的熱門專業。國際漢語教育學會（ISCLP）於2007年成立，標誌著國際漢語教育作為一個學科的形成。
