父親廖西東（1881年－1960年）為日治時期豐原地區名耆，曾任豐原街街長。母親田中春子（1884年－1963年）為日本石川縣金澤市人。廖忠雄於1948年2月17日与廖節（婚前原名佐藤節子，1915－2015年[1]）結婚，岳父佐藤謙太郎是日治時期台中廳長（台中州知事）。
廖忠雄及妻子育有六名子女，其中長子廖一久為中央研究院院士，幼子廖了以曾任兩屆台中縣縣長。
