- 1921年4月1日(日治紀年大正10年)成立，原名「臺中州溪湖尋常小學校」，只供給糖廠日人子弟就讀。[2] [3]
- 1941年4月1日，改名為「臺中州溪湖國民學校」。
- 1946年4月5日，改名為「臺中縣溪湖鎮溪湖第三國民學校」。
- 1947年5月22日，改名為「臺中縣溪湖鎮大竹國民學校」。
- 1950年10月21日，改名為「彰化縣溪湖鎮大竹國民學校」。
- 1951年1月15日，改名為「彰化縣溪湖鎮湖南國民學校」。
- 1968年8月1日，改名為「彰化縣溪湖鎮湖南國民小學」。
- 2021年4月3日，舉辦「創校一百週年校慶」。
