曾任現代詩社社長、台語文推展協會會長。1964年加入笠詩社，1987年為台灣筆會理事，1991年與黃勁連等人創立「蕃薯詩社」，發行《蕃薯詩刊》，強調「台語文學就是台灣文學」，1994年參與主辦第一屆南鯤鯓台語文學營。曾榮獲1976年吳濁流新詩獎，1994年榮後台灣詩獎，2004年鹽分地帶文藝營台灣文學貢獻獎。
林宗源重詩的知性，詩作題材多元，從台灣社會、鄉土、人生哲學到政治運動皆有。著有詩集《力的建築》、《食品店》 、《補破網》、《力的舞蹈》、《濁水溪》、《林宗源台語詩選》、《無禁忌的激情》、《林宗源台語詩精選集》等等。
