繼1994年10月出版台灣第一本關於同性戀歷史與文化的報告書《同性戀邦聯》引起社會的矚目後，在6月1日、端午節的前一天，台大男同性戀研究社(GayChat)聯合台大女同性戀研究社(Lambda)，在Lambda指導老師張小虹及熱心於同志人權的人士的力促下，組成「香包小組」，策劃了一個屬於台灣同志朋友的節日，他們將此一整天的同性戀文化活動，稱為「校園同性戀日」，英文名字是「GLAD」—Gay and Lesbian Awakening Day，意即校園同志甦醒日之意。
GLAD挪用異性戀思考下的端午節，來運作屬於同性戀的節日，除了強調同性戀文化的欣喜歡樂，更提出了一些另類的詮釋方法來顛覆異性戀機制下的單一角度思考。
因此透過GLAD的系列活動，主辦方希望形成一股校園同志力量的集結，藉由社團力量，讓同志學生們得以在其中找到類似生命經驗的同伴，瞭解自己並不是孤單存在的異類，進而能建立更完善的自我認同感，消除自卑與恐懼感。
