死亡之群是因為1945年美國對廣島投下原子彈而甦醒。[來源請求]後來因發生了美國勞頓號事件，君主計畫因而成立，而此時的死亡之群以及哥吉拉起初都被稱之為穆透(M.U.T.O.，全名為Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism)。在1954年，君主計畫決定在比基尼環礁，嘗試用核彈殺死死亡之群以及哥吉拉。而最終死亡之群被核彈殺死，後者則倖存。而事後，該組織對於這次行動，則對外宣稱是核試驗，藉以掩人耳目。
