王得祿，祖籍江西，今嘉義縣太保市人：生於乾隆三十五年（西元一七七○年），十五歲入武庠，歷經清代乾、嘉年間的林爽文、朱濆、蔡牽等反清事件，皆因平亂有功，屢加軍功，官拜閩浙提督、封二等子爵。道光十八年（西元一八三八年）加封太子太保銜，故嘉義當地以王得祿位居高津、復得爵位，乃以「太保」為地名，極具崇褒與紀念的意義。道光二十一年（西元一八四一年）鴉片戰爭期間，王得祿駐防澎湖，是年十二月病逝於防次，享年七十二歲。至道光二十四年（西元一八四四年）營葬此地。[1]
王得祿為大清從一品提督太子太保銜二等子爵，為清治台灣官位最高者，因此其陵寢按傳統清律例建造，氣勢頗為恢弘；除了墓地廣大外，另有石虎、石羊、石馬、石象、石翁仲等石象生等重要歷史文物。[2]
