中醫藥學中，甘草多屬使藥（中医也称为药引），作用是引導藥物直達病變部位，且具有調和各種中藥的功能，因此很多傳統藥方都配搭甘草使用。甘草演員在演出中的功能，正如甘草在中藥的效能一樣，具有襯托、調和與引導的作用。表面看來屬可有可無，但其實是不可或缺的角色。
