左翼网站乌有之乡创办于2003年，2008年后越发倾向民族主义和国家主义。2011年前后，红色中国网创办，与乌有之乡形成显著的观点分歧。红色中国网整体倾向是反对张宏良所谓“反腐锄奸，整党救国，大众民主，共同富裕”的口号，强调阶级矛盾为中国国内主要矛盾。红色中国网视“救党保国派”为修正主义者，而修正主义者则称在红色中国网等网站发言的激进左派为“沉船派”。
2012年，乌有之乡、红色中国网等网站被强制关停。
2013年7月，針對前中国共产党重庆市委员会书记薄熙来相關案件，红色中国网以“红色中国特别时评”名义发表文章《历史将宣判薄熙来无罪！》，以“红色中国时评”名义发表文章《左派要在薄熙来问题上统一认识》，认为薄熙来是“从资产阶级内部分裂出来的优秀左派政治家，其左转之后的路线和政策代表了群众的利益”。东方红网对此文表示批评。[1]
