自绝于人民是中国政府在文化大革命时期，对自杀者的政治定性，意指“与党和人民对抗而自取灭亡”，在当时自我了断的行为被认为是没有正面价值，而且是反社会的对抗行为，亦称作“自绝于党和人民”。

20世纪50年代，该短语用于指责个体脱离中国共产党和中国人民，其意为“自己割断、断绝与党和人民的联系”。该短语曾被大量用于1957年反右时期对右派的指责、喝斥中（《人民日报’49—97数据库》167条记载中（见于1957年）就有124条，占74.25%），文革时升级为强加在自杀者头上的罪名。

文革自杀多见于初期（1966年－1969年），1966年占自杀总数的29.03%，1967年占16.13%，1968年占32.26%，1969年占9.68%，1970年以后占13%。一般源于突然而至的社会混乱，价值秩序的幻灭、颠倒，致使自杀者失去了自己的社会地位，失去了适应社会要求的能力，失去了与社会的联系，无法忍受批斗等肉体摧残、人格侮辱的暴力施虐，看不到出路。因此他们往往选择以放弃一己生命的代价，试图来表达自己最后的抗议，并维护自己仅存的尊严。

观点[编辑]
当时的革命人认为，历史必然永远指向进步，人的生命只能属于组织、国家和革命事业。放弃生命权这种消极自由的个人行为，则因为游离于组织之外，打断了正在行进的大批判步伐，用死亡玷污了革命的名誉，阻碍了革命的部署。因而这种个人行为在当事人生命结束后也会继续纳入社会、政治的范围，再次推上革命法庭进行审判。
也有观点认为，“自绝于人民”并不完全代表对自杀行为的定性，可能只是一个描述性的罪行认定。 脚本错误：没有“Unsubst”这个模块。
