釜石自動車道（正式名稱：東北橫斷自動車道釜石秋田線）在1987年國土開發幹線自動車道發展規劃時，有計畫在三處地方其中一處作為與東北自動車道的交界點，當中包括在紫波、花卷和北上。最後，由於考慮了方便使用花卷機場的車輛，所以便選擇在花卷作交界點。
