作者潘柏麟出身語言學，現為大學英文部學術統籌。本身喜歡到日本、英國、美國旅行、欣賞各地文化和歷史，並在遊歴的過程中結識當地朋友。
《英日社交用語[2]》一書並非一本簡單的語句書，亦是一本研究著作。作者用語言學專門知識，發現英日兩語確實有異同之處，透過學術的調查手法做訪問，根據受訪旅客回應得出的結果，以旅行時會遇到的難題，通過教學佐證去研究各種現象、相關語句及解決方法。本書內每個旅遊情境均切合大眾的實際需要，以實用的社交用語，幫助讀者了解日英兩語使用者的文化差異，提供一個旅遊時能使用的用語錦囊，對話更設有中、英、日對譯，對讀者皆有裨益。[3]
