早年為遊俠，喜飲酒、賭博、擊劍，流連北里，作妙對。三十歲才認真作八章文，補弟子員，後舉孝廉，選縣丞，後又因功升為縣令，曾告病辭職，後曾一度復出。
妻、子染瘟疫皆死後，據稱受其妻兒託夢，自此篤信佛法，作功德，不再出仕，隱居峨嵋山。四處檀施，興修伽藍叢林，八十歲時面向西方，念佛而逝。妻死不娶，帶髮修頭陀行，以同宗子為螟蛉子。

蔣臻德作《西方淨土功德記》，認為現世安穩跟往生淨土是不同的修行方法。
阿彌陀佛的每個名號都代表其美德，念無量壽佛則思佛壽命無量，念無量光佛則思佛光明無量。如欲往生西方淨土，念阿彌陀佛的各種名號都可以，只要專心即可。但最推薦專念「南無阿彌陀佛」，因為此佛號，統攝了此佛的各種功德，故應該不分根智，一心稱六字寶號；蔣臻德認為蓮宗的阿彌陀佛即是禪宗的毘盧遮那佛，只是「無量光」三個字的各種稱謂而已。他也勸禪宗行者不要生起分別心，諸佛壹體，功德平等，念一佛則念一萬佛。稱《金剛經》：「信心清淨，則生實相。」萬善同歸，禪宗即是蓮宗，如要發願往生西方淨土，專念「南無阿彌陀佛」即可。
蔣臻德亦重視俗家弟子之在生利益，如欲求現世安穩，提倡摩利支菩薩法門、準提菩薩法門，並認為兩菩薩為同體。一心修持真言，感應神速。應持誦文殊菩薩神咒、準提神咒、摩利支菩薩神咒等，如能持各種咒，愈能得到各菩薩感應照護。
