关于贾代善的材料和研究，主要是笔记记载和索隐派的论著。早期索隐派或认为，《红楼梦》是写纳兰性德家事的，贾代善即故相明珠。后来人们否定了此说，认为其原型和影射的对象主要有张宗仁说、礼亲王说、曹玺说和胤初说[4]。这些说法，大都靠不住。其名义也有多种说法，蔡元培认为是“伪朝之所谓善也”[5]，杜世杰则认为谐音“假代嬗”，即指满清代明而有天下[6]。
