迷霧通爲中華人民共和國、伊朗等實行網際網路審查的國家的用戶提供服務，其所屬公司Gephyra OÜ註冊於愛沙尼亞，據發佈者Eric Tung（nullchinchilla）所述，相關人員沒有一個位於中國境內[1][2]。
迷雾通提供用户最低限度的免费使用，连接速度以及可选区域服务器上会进行限制，以及完全解除限制的付费使用。此外，還有迷霧通官方爲用戶設立讨论及状况回报用的論壇及Telegram频道。

2019年12月4日，一位用戶名爲nullchinchilla的用戶在品蔥論壇上發佈文章，向大衆公開了迷霧通的存在。作者nullchinchilla表示在此之前該軟體已低調運行多年，開發該軟體的初衷是“认为现在常用的翻墙软件生态非常有问题，特别是到了最近基本上没有什么又简单易用又高速可靠的翻墙途径了。”[2]
2020年7月，由于港版国安法正式生效，其取消了内置的香港新界的出口[3]。
2021年2月21日，迷霧通4.0正式版在各支持平台發佈。4版使用了Rust进行重写，网络协议从niaucchi协议改为sosistab协议（均为其自有协议）；用户体验上，主要是从3版免费用户的800Kbps限速提升到1.6Mbps[4]。
2022年9月7日，迷霧通宣佈iOS版本開始公開測試。[5]
2022年10月16日，迷霧通開放4.6版本測試。[6]
原理[编辑]
迷霧通使用獨立開發的niaucchi4協議進行連接，作者表示該協議基於ScrambleSuit等學術認可的協議，基于UDP并在保证性能的前提下有高强度的混淆和加密，並難以被機器學習辨別。[2]
隱私政策[编辑]
迷霧通公司註冊在愛沙尼亞，受歐盟嚴格的隱私法保護。官方表示從不會記錄用戶的瀏覽信息，也絕不會向第三方主動交出任何用戶資料。同時，迷霧通使用了其自研的Mizaru用戶認證協議。[1]
