在澳門一位中學畢業的青年林禮文(萬梓良 飾 )，與天主教徒的母親許潔心(黃曼梨 飾)因為到香港出席的婚宴，見識香港上流社會的風光，返到澳門開始不甘貧苦，放棄了文具店員及林母幫他覓得的小學教席，到酒店做侍應，感到賺錢容易，並與女子相戀，其後該女子因為到夜總會上班，林反對繼而與女友發生爭執，女友派人找林報仇，林禮文以為錯手殺人，於是避走香港。
其後因為租住香港的公寓，認識公寓東主女兒周玉蓮(陳毓娟 飾)，與之相戀。後來林母透過區卓賢 (張 瑛 飾)尋回，林不願意跟林母回澳門，區卓賢出於對許的舊情，及兒子遠在美國，生意未有人協助，於是收留林禮文，並在區的工廠工作，擔任助理管工，與女工蘇美貞(張美璉 飾)相戀，因為林得到區的賞識，職位逐步高升，並且與溫氏企業的太子女溫珊妮(張瑪莉 飾)同時相戀。
林禮文為了與溫珊妮訂婚，即使蘇已懷了林的骨肉，仍強逼蘇一人到新界居住，最後林安排在烏溪沙租艇出海與蘇爭執，雙雙落水，林見死不救，獨自游上岸逃去，蘇不幸浸死。其後蘇屍被發現，警方調查，最後查出林是兇手，於林﹑溫結婚當日，被警方拘捕最後被判謀殺罪成，在監獄內自殺身亡。
