依李福成的《鍾馗傳說集》，此陣相傳出自於唐朝德宗年間開始對鍾馗的信仰崇拜，結合五福大帝傳說，人們飾演為引路鬼（驅邪、壓煞）、燈籠鬼（替鍾馗照路）、板凳鬼（讓鍾馗路途中休息）、擔子鬼（替鍾馗挑行李）、雨傘鬼（替鍾馗拿雨傘遮雨）等。張益《鍾馗在閩南的信仰傳說》，明朝人林豪家中被狐仙鬧不寧，有人從中原引進此陣法而驅鬼得平安，此後在閩南大盛。陳武體《鍾馗論》載此陣在清朝乾隆由田阿施（令說為田阿善）帶到臺灣。
