1953年，毕业于著名华侨中学——巴城中学。1957年，毕业于北京矿业学院。1957年至1959年，在北京清华大学进修研究生。1982年获香港大学哲学博士。1992年，由于在电力拖动及电动车研究方面的杰出成就，当选美国电气电子工程师院士（IEEE Fellow）。1997年，当选英国皇家工程院院士、中国工程院院士和乌克兰工程科学院院士。[2][3]
