陳哲民八十年代於香港大學獲得電機及電子工程哲學博士後，再於1988年遠赴紐約城市大學布魯克林學院（Brooklyn College, City University of New York）的戲劇系進修，取得戲劇表演藝術碩士學位[1][2]，並在香港電影業發展，參與演出和導演等，其後加入香港城市大學創意媒體學院助理教授。
