二十世紀八十年代，在胡耀邦和趙紫陽兩任中共中央總書記主政下，是中華人民共和國歷史上政治環境最寬鬆、新聞輿論最開放的一段時期[4]
民眾支持及政治壓力[编辑]
由維基解密所洩漏出去的美國駐北京大使館的一系列電文指出，此民主運動已獲取廣大民眾支持，並有效地占據北京的全部中央區域，對中國共產黨形成政治壓力，而當時中華全國總工會主席倪志福不但谴责首都的戒严令，並警告說若學生群眾沒有受到政府當局的尊重，他將會領導一全國性的罷工[5]。
六四事件[编辑]
脚本错误：没有“main”这个模块。 六四事件發生前，因反對使用軍隊鎮壓民主運動，中共中央總書記趙紫陽、中共中央政治局常委胡啟立等開明派與中共元老鄧小平、陳雲等強硬派領導人决裂[4]。
六四事件後，趙紫陽被中共中央定性為「支持動亂」和「分裂黨」，被罷免一切職務，並遭到長達十五年零八個月的軟禁 ，至2005年1月逝世[4]。
