2020年12月4日下午1点左右，望江县公安局报警服务台接到报警称:望江县吉水桥边有一女孩欲轻生。接警后，望江县公安局指示距离事发地点最近的雷阳派出所立即赶到现场处置，雷阳派出所副所长带领三个辅警赶赴现场。在民警安抚劝导过程中，女孩情绪不稳定突然扑入深水区，处警民警手拉手试图展开施救，因不会游泳又退回。一名围观市民跳下去河营救，却已经找不到女孩。女孩最终被当地救援队救起，送医抢救后医治无效死亡。[1]

相关视频在中国网站上流传开后，许多人谴责警察见死不救。谴责者认为警察救人太敷衍，女孩一开始并不是在深水区，而是站立在浅水区，当时有几位警察就在岸边，这个距离警察完全可以把女孩给拉回来，但是警察并没有这样做，根本就不愿意下水。
也有支持警察的声音，支持者认为当时这五个警察可能不会游泳，警察的命也是命。[2]

2020年12月4日晚上11点，望江县公安局发布通报称已经对4个涉事警察进行停职处理，并且成立了调查组调查警察的施救行为。[3]
2020年12月5日，九派新闻联系雷阳派出所，雷阳派出所透露在场的4名警察都不会游泳，又称警察不是超人。[4]
