恶俗维基以记录中国互联网部分人物和事件为主，包括但不限于bilibili等弹幕视频分享网站的企业家和投稿人、电子游戏产业的企业家和实况主、网络评论员、网络红人、民间科学家、公务员及其后代、网络论战事件、被中国政府列为审查对象的新闻内容等信息[4][7]。部分ACG次文化相关条目曾被媒体引述[8][9]。
恶俗维基所展示的内容来源各异，既有公开的资料、由恶俗维基用户自行提供的一次文献与二次文献，也有利用中国网络实名制、手机实名制、户籍等渠道非法收集的公民个人信息[10][11]。

恶俗维基得名于一种源自百度贴吧、被称为“恶俗”的网络迷因。“恶俗”迷因起源于“百度卢浮宫”[12]李毅吧的恶搞文化[13]，最初以恶搞运动员、演员、歌手等公众人物及其拥趸为主，后经过多次人肉搜索事件逐渐成型，并于2008年与李毅吧分道扬镳[13]。“恶俗”迷因的创作成分较高，有着反权威和反刻奇的解构主义特征[14]，产生了不少影响力较强的互联网用语，如翔、屌丝等[4][15]。也有进步主义者质疑“恶俗”迷因存在大男子主义和另类右翼的内容[16]。
恶俗维基的前身是一个小众的Wikia网站，由受“恶俗”迷因影响的音MAD爱好者于2013年建立，以批判bilibili及其创始人徐逸为主。收到检举的Wikia网站运营方随后将该站台强制关闭。2014年1月8日，基于MediaWiki并拥有独立域名的恶俗维基重新上线。

恶俗维基上线后影响力逐渐增强，所涉及的范围也从音MAD逐渐扩大到御宅族群体乃至其他次文化领域[17]。在恶俗维基的影响下，不少性质相仿但侧重领域各有不同的中文网络百科全书陆续出现[18][19][20]。2017年7月至2018年10月，恶俗维基一度下线[4][16]，期间诞生了若干由“恶俗”迷因爱好者建立的用于存放部分条目备份的站点以及自称继承恶俗维基的站点[21]，均未能长期运营。
在中国网络安全审查制度的影响下，恶俗维基曾多次被防火长城以域名服务器缓存污染等方式进行屏蔽。目前恶俗维基的服务器位于互联网审查程度较低的东欧地区。
社会反响[编辑]
由于部分条目涉及人物行为不端、诸多虚拟社区内的不良现象被曝光[22]，恶俗维基得到过部分网民的支持[7]，话题性和关注度逐渐上升[10][23][24]。
2019年4月，恶俗维基对刘慈欣的百度帐号“shipship”及其相关言论进行公示和批判[6]，引发广泛争议和关注[2][25]。观察者网指出恶俗维基和百度涉嫌侵犯网络隐私，并高度赞同刘慈欣在百度贴吧上的言论[26][27][28]。而激流网和《新青年书评》则对恶俗维基予以正面评价，并将恶俗维基作为不受统治阶级调节之第五权的代表与维基解密首席编辑朱利安·阿桑奇以及棱镜计划告密人爱德华·斯诺登相提并论[7]。
凤凰网评论称以大字报为书写形式的网络暴力不能解决问题，民众应该将舆论监督权交给法律和媒体，不应该对未涉嫌反华的人物进行舆论监督[3][29][30]。《南方都市报》强调人肉搜索引发的后果通常是恶性的，呼吁克制曝光个人信息的行为[31]。《新京报》认为恶俗维基已经超出了网络暴力的范畴，主张诉诸法治[32]。浙江电视台经济生活频道报道称恶俗维基公开刘慈欣的身份证号码、住宅、手机等信息，属于侵权行为[6]。
科普作家方舟子批评了支持刘慈欣的媒体，反对以“公众人物”等借口为犯错的具体人物开脱[33]。泉州市文艺评论家协会副秘书长陈伯强表示利用网络实名制进行活动的恶俗维基反而证明了网络实名制的重要性和必要性[5]。
