《If》是1907年英國第一位獲得諾貝爾文學獎的詩人約瑟夫·魯德亞德·吉卜林（Joseph Rudyard Kipling，1868-1936）寫給12歲兒子John的一首短詩，語言質樸，風格簡約，平淡之中蘊含著深邃的哲理[1]。
《If》一詩分為四個段落，其第一段：
「If you can keep your head when all about you ,
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise」，
大意為：
「如果眾人失去理性責難於你，而你仍能保持冷靜；
如果眾人對你心存猜疑，而你能相信自己，還能原諒他們的懷疑；
如果你能耐心等待，而不厭倦，或遭人誹謗，而不以牙還牙，
或遭人憎恨，卻不怨天尤人；然而別看來太好，話也別講得太聰明」[2]。
其第二段：
「If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster,
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken,
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools」，
大意為
「如果你有夢想，而不為夢想所宰制；
如果你能思考，勿只思考而不行動；
如果你能坦然面對勝利和慘敗，而把這兩個騙子一視同仁；
如果你聽到你講的真話遭小人扭歪 去誘陷無知，卻仍能泰然自持，
或者眼見你畢生心血毀於一旦，而仍能胼手胝足 憑堪用的資源去重建」。
其第三段：
「If you can make one heap of all your winnings,
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your losses;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew,
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you,
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'」；
大意為
「如果你把贏得的財富孤注一擲，而不幸失敗，
但仍能從頭再來，並對你的失利三緘其口；
如果你能強迫你的雄心、勇氣和力量，
在它們俱已枯竭時仍為你奮起效勞，
因此當你一無所有，只剩下吩咐它們：“撐下去！”的意志時，
你就這樣撐下去 堅持到底」。
其第四段：
「If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute，
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!」
大意為
「如果你能跟群眾交談而仍保持你的美德，
或者與權貴同行而不忘群眾，
如果敵人或摯友都傷不了你；
如果眾人對你信任有加，卻不過分依賴；
如果你能惜時善用六十刻度的每一秒鐘，
努力充實稍縱即逝的每一分鐘，
地球和它所有的一切，就是屬於你的，
而且，更重要的是--- 孩子，你將是個頂天立地之人!」。
《If》曾被譯成27國語言作為學習的教材，許多人特別是青少年常以此勉勵自己，激發前進的動力。其中「If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same.」還被刻在溫布敦 (Wimbledon) 球場入口的牆上，守護著這舉世聞名的球賽。
