該宣言主要內容，在於批評簡稱央視的中國中央電視台「意圖隱瞞反映中國社會矛盾的暴動事件」，同時也「歪曲歷史真相」。另外該宣言也指陳央視的新聞報導「只不過是中國共產黨與中國政府的宣傳工具」。為了表示抗議，包含凌滄州等；成員包含律師、學者等22名的該宣言發起人聲稱「今後不再看CCTV（央視）的節目」。
因為中國所有媒體都在中共中央宣傳部的嚴厲監控之下，該宣言所表達的批判內容，於中國內部相當罕見。據日本《產經新聞》報導，該影響已某程度地擴大；網路上「我也要參加杯葛行動」的相關回應極多。
