地獄哏為一種人與人之間幽默的表達方式，屬於迷因的一種。 隨著網際網路的普及，使得網路迷因快速普及，其中的一部分愛好者，便自然的聚集，並以他人之殘缺、歧視等作為笑點，因為愛好者們自知其不道德，會下地獄，遂以「地獄哏」稱之。

黑人也常為地獄哏的題材，大多是基於美國早期的黑人歧視以及黑奴等事件作嘲諷。
史蒂芬·霍金在被診斷罹患肌萎縮性脊髓側索硬化症後，隨著名氣提高，其坐輪椅且頭傾靠在右肩的形象逐漸廣為人知，遂出現了以此相關的地獄哏。
批評[编辑]
多數的地獄哏愛好者，自知其為不道德的，因此多不在愛好者群體以外的地方開玩笑，通常而言，以黑人做題材的玩笑，多是諷刺黑人歧視，而非歧視黑人。
儘管如此，仍引來了許多的批評。
例如2018年3月14日，霍金的死訊震驚許多人，網路上卻有許多人放置霍金的地獄哏圖，引發批評。[2]
以及反年改團體800壯士中的繆德生因為攀牆墜樓生亡，卻有議員公開貼文「800-1=799」遭到許多人撻伐。[3]
