江西老表

此外，有些近代江西向外省的移民，也保持了“老表”的称谓，如闽北等地。

“江西老表”一词的起源，没有公认的看法，有多种说法：
- 南怀瑾在《论语别裁》中写道：“江西人称『老表』，是最亲切、最好的称呼。其由来是古时候战乱，江西人很多移民到湖南，许多年后，年轻的后代，还回到江西扫墓，而留在江西的后代子孙，以为是祖宗坟墓被他人误祭或盗葬，次年预先守候，两方相见，论起家族上代渊源，认出是表亲关系来，而称『老表』。这个『老表』就说明了宗法社会对血统、家族的重视。”
- 明朝建立时，湖南的长沙附近由于洪武屠湘而一片荒芜，大批江西人迁入湖南。后来在明清之际又有大批江西人迁入，甚至有些地方十户之八九来自江西。后世湖南人认为江西是他们的父母之地，江西人是他们的亲戚，于是把江西人叫做老表。此即江西填湖广的相关传说。
- 朱元璋起義时，一度遇難，获江西人之救援，登基後为了报答当年江西人的恩情，许诺若得天下，江西人遇事可以老表名义直接告御狀。
