王麗美接下總主筆一職後表示會持續秉持聯合報「正派辦報」的精神領導聯合報輿論，落實針砭時政的社會責任。王麗美強調，近年來台灣民主發展出現障礙、經濟產業發展受挫、社會氣氛低迷等議題，都是她未來持續推動社論關注的重大方向。她稱，期盼能透過社論的力量，為台灣的發展提供有效的建議。[4]王麗美曾在社論中認為《國家語言發展法》是要貶抑國語的地位，變成和台語、客語、原住民語等語言並列為「國家語言」的華語[13]。
