聯合報社論在聯合報創刊初期便一直對台灣的政治發展抱有濃厚的興趣。其社論立場偏袒中國國民黨執政當局，並且與執政的中國國民黨當局相唱和[1][2][3]。然而這可能也與中國國民黨的戒嚴有關。[1] 在兩岸事務上的立場親中促統且趨勢逐年增加[4][5]。
聯合報的社論向來缺乏專業論述，向權勢者靠攏，形同民粹，例如，在人口爆炸成長時期，其社論以突顯人口過多有礙經濟發展為論點並提出以節育來解決人口壓力。然而，聯合報社論為了合理化國家節育政策的正當性卻開始將衍生之社會問題歸咎於社會中下階層多育者，而無視弱勢者背後所承擔之生育壓力，除此之外，聯合報社論在文中顯露出對弱勢女性自主避孕能力的質疑。[6] 又例如，把鄭捷殺人案逕自暗示肇因於太陽花學運[7]。
《聯合報》2014年5月23日的社論〈危險心靈：從仇恨幻想到反社會暴行〉：「鄭捷的隨機殺人計畫提前發動，和近來的街頭抗議有沒有關係，外界難以斷言。 但四月間他在臉書上聲稱自己『會有一番大作為』，文中出現廿個「砍」字，正值台灣反服貿、 反核四、割闌尾示威期間；當時那種沸沸揚揚「造反有理」的氣氛，乃至警察面對群眾束手無策 的情景，也許不知如何刺激了鄭捷的神經，想要「做件大事」的念頭便油然而生。」聯合報社論曾經參與中國國民黨黨內的省籍鬥爭，立場傾向外省派，並以「民粹主義」指涉國民黨內本省派的領導者李登輝[8]。
