在中文语境下的含义有别于既往的西洋定义，令牌系统只用于表示一种网络经济体系，又称通证经济、代币经济。
令牌系统普遍指代使用虚拟货币或加密的资源使用权等具有可溯性与唯一性的交易媒介进行激励的，特别是使用区块链技术的，大规模协作、通过参与者共识形成自组织的经济体。

Token 最初指英美历史上非官方发行的市场流通硬币，后衍生成为铁道路签以及数字令牌；中文语境中“通证经济”这种译法的含义仅取自数字令牌，“通证”一词最早由孟岩与元道翻译。
