2012年，白血病患者、22岁的张琪经过骨髓移植手术后失败，再次复发白血病。2013年10月中旬，病情加重的他决定捐献遗体。2013年11月11日，他和家人在决定后向武汉市红十字会致电咨询捐赠遗体，并解释病情。但红十字则表示“我们也帮不了你，不提供上门服务”[1]。内心被伤害的张琪仍然坚持让姐姐去红十字代领捐献表。张琪随后把遭遇发到互联网上，引起了媒体和民众的关注[2]。事件爆发后，2013年11月12日，红十字会派人去医院探望张琪[3]。
