佛教認為，從靈魂或神識投胎後，便開始痛苦，並形容靈魂或神識在入胎的痛苦程度如同胎獄，那個苦跟地獄沒有兩樣。佛教認為，人有前世，而人忘記了前世，其中一個原因，就是胎獄情況太痛苦，令胎兒忘掉了他的前世。如同一個人在大病後，記憶喪失，變成甚麼都不懂一樣。佛教認為，胎獄是生苦，是八苦之一。生苦跟死苦是人生最大的苦，任何病苦都比不上。[5][4]
