張繼高曾有「三不原則：不教書、不出書、不上電視。」也因此，許多喜好張繼高文章的讀者只能收集報紙。著名作家齊邦媛[2]、陳黎、王大空、九歌創辦人蔡文甫等人都曾請求張繼高出書，張繼高仍堅守原則，不肯出書。
民國83年（1994年）9月，張繼高在臺北榮民總醫院檢查時發現罹患肺癌。民國84年（1995年）5月終於接受親友的要求，破戒出版第一本書[3]。該書於同月由九歌出版社出版。6月，張繼高病逝於仁愛醫院。
書名由來[编辑]
- 由於當時張的病情已不佳，便全權交與蔡文甫負責，故本書書名並非張繼高訂名而是蔡文甫[4]
- 當時張繼高的病情惡化，讓許多文化界人士非常擔憂，恰好其中一篇篇名為「必須贏的人」，蔡文甫決定以為名，希望張氏能戰勝病魔，重回文化界並繼續創作。
